Once you begin to suffer from blood pressure problems you will find that you need to take readings and tabulate them in a blood pressure chart so that your doctor can make an assessment of your condition. If you can afford to do so you should invest in a home blood pressure monitor to enable you to take readings on a regular basis in the comfort of your own surroundings. A good blood pressure monitor will have software that has the capability of charting your blood pressure and will give options for several types of charting. Daily, weekly, monthly and long term blood pressure statistics can be charted quite easily. The blood pressure chart can then be printed and brought along to your medical professional for assessment. It is important to take a blood pressure reading at the same time every day to get an accurate representation of your blood pressure.

It is a known fact that blood pressure will be higher when you visit your doctor due to a condition called ‘white coat syndrome’. For this reason alone a more accurate reading will be forthcoming if you can take your own blood pressure away from the medical center environment.

Omron blood pressure

In my opinion the best monitors are from a company called Omron. These monitors are calibrated and very accurate as well as being easy to use. It is possible with many models to chart your reading and this is done automatically by the equipment which can retain several months of reading. The ability to hold blood pressure data over a long period is important if you are using medication to control your blood pressure because you will see even a gradual change in readings as they occur.

Interpreting BP readings

There are two readings shown in the chart above which are the diastolic and systolic readings. The systolic reading shows the output from your heart when it works hardest and the diastolic reading is the taken when the heart is not pumping (between heart beats). A pressurized cuff is used on your arm to detect the BP readings. The normal BP chart should show a consistent value of 130/85 (systolic/diastolic) but these figure change slightly depending on the age of the person whose reading is being assessed. Blood pressure should be taken when you are composed and restful otherwise erroneous readings will be recorded f you take a measurement after vigorous exercise. Different times of the day will show differences too so, as mentioned earlier, do try to take blood pressure readings as the same time each day.

Incredibly, one in four adults suffers from some sort of blood pressure problem with the main issues being High Blood Pressure (HBP) or Low Blood Pressure (LBP). Perhaps HBP or hypertension is sympathetic of the stressful times we live in today where many occupations are very stress ridden. Very few symptoms exist and you may have a Blood Pressure (BP) problem without knowing anything about it. It is likely however that it will be discovered at your annual check-up with your Doctor (provided you do go for such tests). Migraine headaches has been associated with HBP so if you experience frequent headaches you may well be able to relieve them with a low dose of BP prescribed medication. If you suspect that you have HBP do consult your medical advisor immediately and if it transpires that your blood pressure is indeed too high then it becomes imperative that you lower blood pressure fast in an effort to prevent an infarction in the heart.

HBP in your family

If any member of your family has suffered from high or low BP then you should immediately get checked to make sure you are not prone to stroke or heart attacks. HBP is often referred to as ‘the silent killer’ so you should be aware of the condition and be able to check your own body on a regular basis. Once you have the readings they can be graphed or charted easily if you prefer to see the data graphically. Some people prefer to see the data as shown but the graphic blood pressure chart is more easily read, especially if large ranges of readings are involved. Your doctor may like to see a range of readings as well as the most recent ones.

Once you have purchased your own monitor and followed the instructions for using it you will be able to record blood pressure information for your General Practitioner (GP). Your doctor will then be able see if you have issues with BP and he or she will be able to give you advice on the format or type of blood pressure chart that would be most beneficial to them in forming a medical opinion.
