Choosing kitchen furniture is an exciting business, especially if it is the first kitchen you have furnished and you are just starting out with your first home. There are so many options available for modern kitchens it is often difficult to make a decision. There are many interior design companies that can do everything for you so that kitchen fitters are organise to come in and everything is fitted and furnished and you don’t have to lift a finger.

Planning and design

Many leading kitchen stores have a planning and design section that can take your kitchen measurements and turn them into a three dimensional computer generated image so that you can see what your kitchen can look like when it is complete. It is definitely worth your while to get a couple of these done so that you can make comparisons and work out how they will work for you.

If you want to do it yourself then look at all designs and styles to begin with and eventually try to narrow it down to two colors and two styles. Do you want open shelves or storage cabinets, natural stone or kitchen tiles? All these decisions have to be made before you make your final choices.

Small kitchen spaces

If space is limited for you then it is extremely important to maximise storage possibilities to keep the area from getting cluttered. Think about hanging racks from the ceiling so that pots and pans can be hung up. There are small sized dish washers, fridges and washing machines available for those with limited space. Islands are very popular at the moment, but they take up a lot of room, so it is perfect for those with a large kitchen but not if you have a small space to contend with.

Eating places

Where will you be eating? Do you have a separate dining room or do you have to eat in the cooking area? Will you have a big breakfast bar and kitchen bar stools or counter stools that slide under the bar when not in use, or will you have a dining table and upholstered chairs, wood chairs or folding chairs? These are just some of the decisions facing house owners who are organising their areas.

Utility rooms

Do you have a separate utility room? This is the area that should contain all your white goods and will give your kitchen lots more storage space. It also takes the noise of the dishwasher and washing machine out of the cooking area.

Open plan furniture

If you have a contemporary kitchen it may well be open-plan which means that you may cook, eat and relax in the same room. Sometimes people wish to define the areas using either colour on the walls, glass shelving or different types of flooring. It is important to understand the flow of the room and in small spaces this might mean keeping the floor covering and wall colour to one type so that the space seems to be endless.
