Disney characters on Postage Stamps

Disney stamps are beautiful and many countries have issued stamps featuring Disney characters. My favourite is Winnie the Pooh which was featured a Canadian postal stamp in the 1990s. Winnie was also featured by Taiwan in 2006 when 4 stamps were issued featuring Winnie along with Piglet and Tigger. Other countries that issued specific ‘Winnie the Pooh’ stamps include Ghana, Lesotho, Maldives, St Vincent, Antigua and Gambia to name but a few. Portugal featured all the following Characters in 2001, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Scrooge McDuck, and Huey/Louie/Dewey. If you could get this set it would be a boon to any collection. Saint Vincent, a small volcanic island in the Caribbean issued several hundreds of cartoon stamps featuring Disney characters, many of them showing the famous duo of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Uganda celebrated with separate stamps of Goofy, Huey and Dewey and even a full set of 10 stamps for ‘Goofy’ in the 1990s.

Mickey Mouse, most featured cartoon character on postage stamps

Mickey Mouse has been featured on over 1000 stamps worldwide and is the most famous of all Walt’s character creations. Bulgaria celebrated 100 years of movies with a stamp release showing Mickey Mouse. Belgium too celebrated too with a Mickey Mouse stamp issue. Disneyland in Hong Kong celebrated its grand opening with Hong Kong issuing Stamps of Mickey, Minnie and Dumbo. To my delight I received this one from New York and despite the franking mark it is one of my favorites.

Walt Disney stamps

The United States honored the great Walt Disney himself in the 1960s when a 6-cent stamp was issued showing a nice portrait of Walt surrounded by some of his creations. Apart from the US many other countries have featured Walt including Portugal, Gambia, Dominica, San Marino and St. Thomas and Prince Islands. A nice set for any collector if they could be obtained but Disney stamps are not generally considered to be classified as rare or unusual stamps.

Movie stamp connections

Mongolia, in the 1980s commemorated Disney film ‘Fantasia’ by issuing 10 different postage stamps featuring ‘frame’ shots from the movie. They again issued new Disney Fantasia stamps in the 1990s. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was featured in 2005 on a stamp by Austria for the opening of the movie of the same name. Granada featured ‘Snow White and the 7 Dwarves’ on a set of 10 stamps in the 1980s and then another set of 10 in 1981 featuring ‘Cinderella’.

Stamp collection subjects

Stamp collectors might collect new stamps, Christmas stamps, or themed stamps like the Disney ones opposite or even Olympic sporty ones. They might opt for a stamp collection featuring just one country’s stamps like the USA, Australia, Canada or Great Britain, UK. Stamp collecting is a unique hobby because it can be combined with any other hobby.

Postcards with stamps

A typical example is a collector of postcards which leads naturally to stamps which will be attached to most cards if sent through the postal service. It matters little which hobby you have be it Art and Crafts, Football, Ice hockey or anything else because it will be featured on stamps from some country or another and the hobbies can be linked completely.

Disney postage stamps celebrated

No matter how diverse your hobby is (from antique bottles collecting to playing a chess game) you will find that a stamp or two has been issued concerning your passion somewhere in the world. Cartoon stamps are still very popular and collectable today so get collecting. Disney stamps were issued throughout Europe when the European Disney centre ‘Eurodisney’ opened in Paris, France, and many countries as well as France issued stamps in celebration of this event.
