Etching glassĀ

The art of decorating glass by creating a design in the glass surface is called glass etching. Scratching glass surfaces for decoration, or possibly to improve the grip, was first done in the primitive ages but etching glass is still done today, although the methods of marking glass are somewhat improved.

Glass etched the old fashioned way

Wax glass etching

Etching was completed by covering all the glass with wax, which then was engraved with the pattern required. The entire glass piece was then dipped into a prepared acid which attacked the raw glass which was no longer protected by the wax. When the glass sample was cleaned of both acid residue and wax the image remained fixed into the glass exactly as designed. The old traditional way to glass etch was when the glass item was cold or finished with the firing process.

Etching glass and carving

Etching and carving

Carving glass by etching is a difficult process quite unlike carving wood because glass is many time harder than wood, but the principle involved is the same. The glass carving means, however, are different as a good sharp knife will not make much of an impression on hardened glass. Something harder than glass itself is required and tools for etching are often diamond tipped.

Where glass etching is found

A vehicle registration is often engraved onto the windshield glass but many other glass engraving applications are to be found in modern day society. Glass trophies for Golf, Bridge, Football and other sports are frequently etched or engraved with the winning name or names. Anniversary glass gifts will be glass inscribed with dates of weddings and other anniversaries of importance. Anything of glass origin can be etched, even a wine bottle bought for a special occasion.

Practice etching

Practice your etchings on old glass

If you intend to try out some glass etching at home in your workshop do make sure to have all the protection equipment to hand before you begin. Before you try to etch glass that is of importance to you it would be prudent to make a few trial runs on some old glass bottles or jars. Etching take a bit of practice but it is better to make mistakes on trial glass than on ant of the decorative glass you possess.

Etching tools for glass and other materials

Etch with a Dremel

The Dremel is a rotary tool which fit into your hand as easily as any electrical power tool. Weighing between 12 and 15 ounces it is lighter than a power drill or chop saw and can be operated using just one hand, just like you would use a soldering iron. If used in conjunction with a stencil an amateur will be able to produce the most exquisite glass engraving without error. It includes many fine settings such as controlling the depth of the cut and its cut rate is over 100 cuts per second. Although used mainly on glassware, jewelry and ceramics it can be used on surfaces other than these such as your luggage for instance.

Types of glass etching

Etched glass using chemicals

Etching cream chemical compound

This process uses a chemical which is applied to the area to be treated. The chemical is usually an acid which burns the glass to create the desired image which is a permanent one. The chemical can be used at home in cream form provided all safety precautions are taken. The process usually takes an hour or two to complete and plain water is used to rinse the glass after completion.

Glass Etching stencils

Writing on glass

Stenciled etching makes it so much easier to control where you want to display the images or lettering on glass, ceramics or crystal. Glass stencils work by being placed directly on the working surface and blocking the parts of the glass that you do not want etched. The spaces or gaps in the stencil are where the glass will be marked either by a cream or engraver tool.

Pen Etching

Etching pens

An engraving pen is often smaller that the Dremel but works on the same principle. These pens are quite small and allow you to completed minute work. A small micro engraver for glass, with a diamond tip, can be bought for less than $10. It is only the same size as a ball point pen but can be used for glass etching of treasured possessions.

Etching glass by sandblasting

Sandblasting glass is an industrial process carried out in a specially designed cabinet but small sandblasters can be purchased for home use. The areas of glass to be etched are exposed to the blasting of the sand which causes pitting on the surface. The area of glass remaining free from the process must be protected from the pitting.

Etching Valuables

Valuable etching

If you have glass or ceramic valuables at home you should permanently mark them for insurance reasons. Most of the etching methods and ideas described will work adequately and no great skill is required. Apart from security concerns you will find glass etching to be an interesting pastime and you may even take it up as a hobby.

Thank you for your kind comments on this glass etching hub. Much more can be said on the subject but it may need a specific hub for each etching method.

Very interesting. I have an antebellum home and would love to create beautiful glass works of art to display in my hope that are period authentic.

Thank you for your comments. It is well worth the effort involved to become proficient with the etching of glass for small scale pieces. But for some large expanses, windows perhaps, you might consider glass frosting designs. Pre war history books of the period might be helpful with some design choices. It sounds like a very interesting project.

Thank you for your kind comments. Great to meet a fellow glass lover on Hubpages. I hope that you do experiment with a little glass etching sometime, as its great fun to do, especially with the mini, pen like, glass engraving tools.

The information provided about glass etching is basic. Although the procedure is quite basic in itself. I have recently gotten into the glass blowing / lampworking field myself. It is an amazing form of artwork and now I have expanded my knowledge of working with glass in yet another way. This information has me extremely excited to purchase the etching equipment I need to start etching designs into my future glass work.

Thank you for your comments. I am delighted that you are experimenting with glass blowing as it adds a new dimension to decorating glass and eliminates the need to know about how to engrave glass with etching cream as your glass will be hot (as opposed to the cold etching with cream). This glass etching hub was intended for beginners and the subject can become quite complex as you are no doubt discovering with your own advanced artwork. Many artists use glass carving chemicals as the work and perhaps you might be willing to write a hub on your own etched glass ideas and experiences.

Thank you for your comments this on glass etching hub. I fully encourage you to try out some of the ideas for glass etching outlined in the article. The beginner non chemical glass etching kit is the best one to start with for a novice, before going on to more advanced glass carving techniques. Good luck with your glass engraving efforts.

Marking glass is an easy hobby to master and you soon end up doing all the glass etches for the entire family and friends too. Great for insurance purposes and the tool will pay for itself as you use it more. Good article.

Hi. Ordered the Proxxon 28920 as reccommended on your page. They arrived today. Am somewhat disappointed. There are 8 engraving heads with no handle or shank...the image on your page looked as if handles were included. Also they have a reccommended speed which implies they are not 'manual' tools. I had wanted a simple non-automated tool I could use as a pen. Can you help?

Proxxon say that it is a set for engraving, scribing, finishing and frosting glass but they neglect to mention that the holding tool is not included and I agree with you that the image does look like it is a handle (or holder) of some kind and is included.in the set. The manufactureer lists the head types as diamond grinding bit, silicon carbide mounted bit etc, but no indication of the toll bit holder at all.. Apologies, all I can do is remove the misleading ad. A lot of the customers who bought the set also bought the Proxxon 38481 IB/E Professional Rotary Tool but this is a powered tool and not what you required either but seems to be needed with your tool tips. Most of the engraving tools operate at huge speeds like 7,200 strokes per minute so it is difficult to see how a manual tool would compare. See the bit from Dremel which I used to replace the Proxxon. It is an engraver with a carbide point bit BUT will need a power unit to drive it. The best non automated one I found is the 'engraver scribing pen with a retractable carbon steel tip' for less than $4 which is shown above. It will work on hardened steel but I have my doubts that it will function well on glass.
