La Brute online

I discovered my children playing an online game called La Brute and decided to investigate further. The kids created a cartoon like character for me with 3 mouse clicks in 3 seconds flat. The whole fighting game environment seems to be very random in nature and your brute, which you get to name, fights another brute in a small fighting circle (arena). I didn’t have any control over my brute (named Penzzy by the children) that just marched onto the fighting area and fought, dagger in hand. I watched. There is a scoring and rating system and it seems that you can participate in 6 fights on the first day. Each fight lasts about 20 – 30 seconds. You gain points (energy / strength?) for every win in the arena.

Why is La Brute fun

In essence, this is a type of flash game with random results and bonuses generated all the time. Originating in France, hence the ‘La Brute’ title, the initial screen allows you to select an English version with the game being called ‘My Brute’ instead. A Spanish version is also available (El Bruto). There exists an additional feature on the title page that allows you to translate the game into any one of a hundred different languages. The French company which edits the game is called ‘Motion Twin’ and they have a website (and other games).

Brutish characters

La Brute, as mentioned can be created in seconds without recourse to email addresses and such like. To create your own Brute simply type in a unique name. The system will alert you if the name you have chosen is not available. The program is very visual so you just click an icon to change the appearance of your character. I lost count of the number of character types that were available as the kids clicked through them at breakneck speed. Your next click will alter the color of hair, clothes and skin color. When you are happy (I just shouted ‘stop’ as the kids clicked through dozens of fashions) with your choices select ‘validate’ and your Brute is created. The Brutes are very cute but ‘deadly’ looking.

Game Level 1

Once created, you will be given health points, I got 68. You will also have a strength, agility and speed coefficient. Your weapons board will have a single weapon, a spear or a dagger or some such but weapons and other bonus weapons are available when you fight. You enter the section marked ‘arena’ and you are informed that you have 6 fights available. Various other Brutes are displayed (with their respective health points). I fought (you don’t have to press any buttons) and won and lost, and won and lost etc. Some of the other Brutes have strange weapons which even included a dog of some kind which I managed to beat. It is not a killing game in that no blood seems to get spilt in any of the fights and the conquered opponent still seems to be alive and kicking (no pun intended) at the end.

Level 2

I was promoted to Level 2 just by sitting and watching. My type of game! After you have fought all 6 fights (it takes less than 10 minutes) you are informed that ‘Fighting in the arena is tiring for your Brute!’ who is now having a well deserved rest, but that 3 new fights will be available tomorrow. The kids just opened a new window and started ‘fighting’ again under a different username.

Password

You can use a password to prevent you losing control of your own ‘La Brute’ character and this password allows you to join a clan of likeminded brutes? The game, is, of course available on the iPhone and iTouch and is optimized to work with Firefox but you do need a flashplayer of some kind. La Brute or ‘My Brute’ has thousands of followers on Facebook. Did I mention that La Brute has a shop? Yes, you can buy mugs and T-shirts featuring the very cute brute you created. I steer the kids well away from this one!

What is the best way to judge online games like these? All in all, I think it is fairly harmless fun and if you're interested, you could give it a try as it will amuse the kids on a rainy day but I suspect that they will soon get tired of it. Monopoly or Scrabble would be a better option (and last longer) when it is wet outside. Motion Twin, the makers of La Brute is a leading provider of online games and has been in existence for nearly 10 years. It is estimated that more than 11 million players worldwide are registered with Motion Twin. All that’s needed to play is a reasonable web browser. Of its kind, La Brute is neither too bad, nor too violent for the children of today, but parents should be vigilant, always, and keep an eye on what the children look at online.
