Rucksacks come in many shapes, sizes, colours and, materials and are a very important piece of equipment for the climber, hill walker, backpacker or hiker. They are also useful for school books, for carrying your holiday gear instead of a suitcase or kit bag and even for your weekly shopping instead of plastic bags or a basket. They are great presents to give to anyone who is a keen walker or hiker.

Climbing rucksacks

Nowadays climbing rucksacks have the latest technological advances in construction and materials. They can be waterproof, rip proof, light weight and structurally stable. They may have internal loops to hold equipment for proper weight distribution within the pack and back panels that allow air circulation for a more comfortable carry through the day.

Safety and safe storage

They may have removable pouches so that you have safe storage for your valuables without taking the whole pack with you and very often have an internal section that can contain a bladder with a tube for instant hydration. They have all the usual straps and pockets to hold all the gear as well as compression straps and chest straps for extra stability. Welded or taped seams are also available in some models so that the rucksack is completely waterproof. These rucksacks also come in models developed specifically for women. These are generally lighter in weight and have shorter back panels so that they fit a woman’s frame correctly. These bags can contain everything you need for a trip to the mountains including room for your camping sleeping bag and two man tent.

The daypack

The daypack is a light weight smaller version of the full sized rucksack. It is made for carrying the bare essentials for a hill walk. Daypacks usually have a built-in rain cover that is secreted away in a pocket in the base of the day pack and can be pulled out in the rain to completely cover the whole of the pack. It is elasticated around the edges to fit easily around the bag and is usually a bright color for high visibility in case of emergencies. They have a couple of large side pockets as storage places for containing rations or a water bottle and usually a net pocket on the top front to hold a map and compass. The main bag is large enough to hold extra clothing, rain gear and food.

School rucksacks

School bags that are rucksacks can be a very good idea as the weight of the books is distributed onto two shoulders instead of carrying a one strap bag that is hung from a single shoulder causing an imbalance in the posture of the child and often back problems later in life as a result. The main point to think about when buying a rucksack for the school going child is to ensure that you do not buy a bag that is too big. If the bag is a large one, it is probable that it will be filled and that the child will carry too much weight on their shoulders.

Shopping

Buying a bag for your shopping will mean that you have a different set of criteria to fulfil. Maybe you will need a large internal space and fewer pockets, or ease of access to your purchases may be a prerequisite. A bag that has comfortable padded shoulder straps so it is relaxing to carry should be one of the details to be considered. Something that is not to big so that you will not be tempted to fill it to the brim and carry more than you should. Rucksacks are personal to you so go and try one on before you buy.
