Unusual Postage Stamp Collection
62As a philatelist I have been collecting postage stamps for many years and have come to love the hobby because it is continually changing as new stamps are issued. I have some unusual postage stamps in my collection that I wish to share with you. The first one below is a Beatles stamp featuring their albums and what I was first attracted to was the way the stamp appeared to be several stamps stuck one on top of the other. In fact the image used was one of several albums stacked together but the strange part was that the outside edge of the stamp was cut to match the irregular outline of the image. The stamp looks square but closer examination shows the weird corners.
Beatles commemorated on unusual stamp
Imagine the Post Office teller trying to tear off a strip of such stamps for a purchaser whilst trying not to damage them and the delicate corners. Most stamps are regular rectangular or square stamps and can be easily removed from a sheet of printed stamps by simply tearing along the perforations in a neat straight line. Not so these weird shaped stamps, but I do love them.
Unusual Royal Mail postage stamps
This is the second Beatles one, in the same cutting style again. This image is even more recognizable that the one above and again is an iconic Beatles LP cover stacked upon several others LPs. I believe that these stamps are collectible for two reasons, the first being the fact that it is the Beatles and the second reason being the unusualness of the stamps. These stamps were issued by the home country of the Beatles, namely England (or Great Britain) who postal service is the Royal Mail. The most recent stamps from the Royal Mail feature the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Circular postage stamps
Round circular stamps
There are many different shapes of postage stamps issued by countries throughout the world, The regular shapes are traditional square or rectangular style but sometimes an unusual stamp is issued and collectors flock to add them to their collection, as they would do with misprinted stamps.
Irish postage stamps
Popular unusual stamps are the non regular shaped ones such as triangular, diamond, circular or even oval shaped. i have included images of the various types from my collection. The circular ones were issued but An Post, the Irish postal service. The identification on these stamps is Eire which is Gaeilge (Irish language) for Ireland.
Oval postage stamp
Oval stamp
The French postal service issued this sporting stamp in honor of their successful Rugby team. What I like about this stamp is that they have used the oval rugby ball design for the image.
La Poste unusual stamp
La Poste is the postal service of France and this is the only oval shaped stamp that I have in my stamp collection. I am sure that some other countries have issued similar designed oval stamps. I would appreciate it if you could let me know of any by leaving a comment. Thank you.
